Bonding With Your Dog Through Fun Tricks
Teaching Tooyeh Tui fun and simple tricks has been a fantastic way to strengthen our bond and also keep him mentally engaged...not that he needs to be any smarter than he already is!
Here are some delightful tricks to teach your furry friend, guaranteed to bring joy and a bit of flair to your time together:
High Five
Turn your dog into a high-fiving pro! Start by asking your dog to sit. Hold a treat slightly above one of their paws. As they instinctively lift their paw to reach for the treat, say, “High five!” and reward them with the treat and lots of praise. Practice this daily, and soon your dog will be giving high fives like a champ.
Roll Over
Help your dog master the art of rolling over. Begin with your dog lying down on their side. Hold a treat near their nose and gently guide it in a circular motion over their head. As they follow the treat, they’ll roll onto their other side. Once the roll is complete, reward them with the treat and enthusiastic praise. Practice this consistently, and your dog will be rolling over on command in no time.
Speak
Teaching your dog to “speak” can be as entertaining as it is useful! Encourage your dog to bark by making a noise or using a command that typically triggers them to vocalize. As they bark, say, “Speak!” and immediately reward them with a treat. Practice this regularly until they associate the “speak” command with barking. Bonus: This trick is perfect for adding personality to photos or videos of your pup!
Play Dead
This crowd-pleaser is sure to impress! Begin by asking your dog to lie down on their side. Then, say “Bang!” while mimicking a finger gun motion. As your dog falls onto their back, reward them with a treat and plenty of praise. With consistent practice, your dog will “play dead” on cue, delighting everyone who sees it.
Tips for Success
-
Patience is Key: Every dog learns at their own pace. Stay patient and positive throughout the training process.
-
Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog with treats, praise, and affection for their efforts and successes.
-
Practice Regularly: Short, consistent training sessions are more effective than long, infrequent ones.
-
Have Fun! Training is as much about bonding as it is about learning, so enjoy the journey with your pup.
