Fireworks and Furry Family Members: Keeping Your Pets Calm and Safe on New Year's Eve
Share
Fireworks celebrations will be lighting up the sky here in Las Vegas and fortunately for Tooyeh Tui, it's something that he's been accustomed to year after year. However, for many furry family members, the loud noises and flashes can be a source of overwhelming stress. At Tui's Ties, we understand that keeping your pet calm and safe during these times is a top priority. Here are some tried-and-true tips to ensure your beloved companion feels secure and comforted when fireworks are in full swing.
Create a Safe Space
Every pet deserves a sanctuary, especially during noisy festivities. Designate a quiet area in your home where your pet can retreat. Add cozy bedding, their favorite toys, and even an item of clothing with your scent for extra comfort. If your pet’s safe space is a crate, drape a blanket over it to create a den-like atmosphere while leaving the door open for easy access.
Try Calming Aids
Products like thunder shirts, pheromone diffusers, or natural calming treats can work wonders for easing anxiety. If you’re new to these options, consult your vet for recommendations tailored to your pet’s needs. At Tui’s Ties, we’ve heard from customers who pair calming bandanas with these aids for extra style and comfort. Calming Bandanas is definitely something we will be looking into for 2025.
Exercise Beforehand
A tired pet is a calm pet! And for those that know Tooyeh Tui, there's nothing tired about him...he can go on for hours. Before the fireworks begin, take your dog for a long walk or engage your cat in an extended play session. Burning off extra energy can help reduce anxiety when the noises start.
Distract with Entertainment
Keep your pet’s mind occupied with soft music, a favorite TV show, or an engaging toy like a puzzle feeder. We found that there's a few YouTube channels that offer calming music for Tooyeh Tu even while we're home - it really works. The goal is to create a distraction that keeps their focus away from the noise outside.
Stay Close
Your presence is the greatest comfort for your pet. If possible, remain at home during fireworks displays to provide reassurance. Speak to them in a calm voice and offer gentle pets or cuddles as needed.
Ensure Security
Loud noises can cause pets to panic and attempt to escape. Make sure all windows, doors, and fences are secure to prevent frightened pets from running away. For extra peace of mind, check that your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up-to-date.
Avoid Fireworks Displays
As tempting as it might be to bring your pet along to a fireworks show, it’s best to leave them at home in their safe space. Crowded and noisy environments can be overwhelming and even harmful to their sensitive hearing.
